Therapy takes courage, and it's well worth the effort.
Therapy isn't easy. Undertaking the endeavor is an act of courage, hope, and insight, and I feel deeply honored to be involved in the process with you. One of the most powerful parts of therapy comes from the relationship that emerges as we work together. It grows from our joined focus on who you are, what you seek, and your challenges and opportunities along the way. My work is influenced by Attachment Theory and Object Relations Theory, which value the significance of how our experiences, relationships, and feelings from the past tend to be reflected in our ways of relating to the world right now.
Cutting-edge brain science increasingly shows how we are hardwired with the capacity to transform our minds, brains, and relationships to create a better fit between what we're looking for in life and what we actually experience, even in the face of very difficult personal histories or lives that have been marked by trauma. In therapy, we'll be working together toward that "fit" for you.
We won't be entering into our relationship with a specific approach that you then somehow have to adjust to, in order to make it work for you. Instead, the approach tends to come from a blend of what you specifically ask for and what emerges from our conversations. My aim is for you to feel like you're in the driver's seat, but that you have someone alongside to explore the various possibilities of your map.
In practical terms, we'll also be talking about options for making the most of your thoughts, your emotions, your actions, and your relationships, as well as the practice of slowing down enough to just "be," without judgment. Although it's work, I think you'll find the process and results to be very rewarding.
Areas of focus. (also listed in "Mike's Background")
I have extensive experience in addressing depression, anxiety, panic, histories of trauma or abuse, self-defeating patterns of thought and behavior, addictions, grief and bereavement, adult attention deficit, and issues revolving around minority status. I do individual and couple therapy for adults, as well as individual and family therapy for older adolescents and their parents.
